What Your Gift Can Do
The Department is developing a strategic plan with one primary goal: Becoming the flagship program of the southeastern United States. With this goal in mind, we are starting an ambitious fundraising effort that will allow us to build on our departmental strengths and develop new capacities that bring us closer to this goal.
Your support will strengthen our department in three strategic areas:
Global learning
Our research extends beyond the borders of the United States and its territories. We want to provide our graduate and undergraduate students with an opportunity to study abroad as a core component of their studies. Your support will allow us to make global learning more accessible to our students. Our aspiration is to have every major and graduate student study abroad at least once in their program.
Programming
We offer a number of programs to the university community and beyond. This includes lecture series, conferences, panel discussions and book talks. Moving forward, we will offer a biennial national conference that will identify and celebrate the next generation of scholars in the discipline. With your support, this conference and departmental programming will reflect our highest aspirations as a department and the highest standards of the discipline.
Student Scholarships
We have incredible students. Unfortunately, financial challenges sometimes preclude the ability of some of our students to complete their studies or take full advantage of the opportunities available to them. Your support will provide our students with emergency/transitional funds as well as support for travel to academic conferences and field work.
We thank you for your consideration. If you wish to donate, please consider contributing to our general fund.
The Lucille Adams Scholarship

The Lucille Adams Scholarship in Africana Studies benefits a rising senior majoring in Africana Studies at Georgia State University. The scholarship honors Kim Hixon's maternal grandmother who raised her and instilled in her a love of learning from an early age. Although she was raised in the Jim Crow South and was forced to leave school as a young child to work the cotton fields, she made sure Kim appreciated her chance to learn. In their house, every month was Black History Month. It was fascinating to Kim and allowed her to learn her history and the long journey we have made. Ms. Adams was Kim's hero, and Kim's life is Lucille's wildest dreams come true.
